A genus of bulbous plants in the Amaryllis family, containing, according to The Plant List, about 20 species. In nature, Eucharis is found in the shaded lower tier of humid forests in Central and South America from Guatemala to Bolivia.
Eucharis, also known as the Amazon lily (Eucharis grandiflora), is a popular bulbous houseplant prized for its lush foliage and fragrant white flowers reminiscent of daffodils. It is relatively easy to care for if you follow the basic rules: bright, filtered light, high humidity, and careful watering without stagnant water.
Growing Conditions
Parameter Care Recommendations
Lighting: Bright, filtered light or partial shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.
Temperature: Heat-loving plant. Optimal temperature is 18-22°C. It does not tolerate drafts or sudden temperature changes.
Watering: Generously during active growth (spring-summer), but only after the top 2-3 cm of soil has dried out. During the dormant period, watering is significantly reduced.
Humidity: Requires high humidity (50-70%). Regular misting or using a tray with moist expanded clay is recommended.
Soil: Prefers a fertile, loose, well-drained substrate. General-purpose soil with added sand or perlite is suitable.
Repotting: Repot infrequently, every 3-4 years, as Eucharis blooms best in a tight pot, allowing the bulbs to fill the entire space.
Flowering and Dormancy
Eucharis typically blooms 1-2 times a year—in spring/summer—and may rebloom in fall or winter.
To stimulate flowering, it is important to provide a dormant period after the previous bloom.
During this period (usually 1-2 months), reduce watering and stop fertilizing, allowing the soil to dry almost completely between waterings.
Resume regular watering and fertilizing when new shoots or leaves appear.
Important Features
Propagation: Propagate the plant by daughter bulbs (pups) during repotting.
Toxicity: All parts of the plant contain the alkaloid lycorine and are poisonous if ingested. Exercise caution when handling the bulbs and keep the plant out of the reach of children and animals.
Leaf Care: Large Eucharis leaves should be regularly wiped with a damp cloth to remove dust, and the plant should be given a warm shower periodically to ensure proper respiration.
