Perennial geranium, or cranesbill (genus Geranium).

Perennial geranium, or cranesbill (genus Geranium), is an easy-to-grow, frost-hardy herbaceous garden plant known for its long and abundant summer blooms and decorative foliage that changes color in the fall. It thrives in sunny and shady locations, forms picturesque clumps, is drought-resistant, and fits beautifully into natural and mixed plantings. Common varieties include meadow geranium, large-rhizome geranium, blood-red geranium, and magnificent geranium.

 Features and Benefits

Ease of Care: Grows well without complex care, tolerates a variety of conditions.

Frost Hardiness: Overwinters outdoors, often requiring no shelter.

Long Blooming Season: Some varieties bloom all summer, while others bloom in sporadic bursts.

Decorative Foliage: The leaves are serrated, and turn vibrant red-orange hues in the fall. Versatility: Suitable for flowerbeds, borders, rockeries, and as a groundcover.

 Planting and Care

Location: Full sun or partial shade. Avoid standing water.

Soil: Prefers moderately moist, well-drained soil.

Watering: Moderate, especially important during the establishment period and during severe drought.

Fertilizing: One or two applications of a complete fertilizer before flowering are sufficient.

Post-flowering care: Removing faded flowers stimulates new blooms; in autumn, shoots can be shortened by a third.

 Popular Species

Meadow Geranium (Geranium pratense): Tall, with blue-blue flowers, a honey plant.

Large-rhizome Geranium (Geranium macrorrhizum): Evergreen, fragrant, an excellent groundcover for shade. Magnificent geranium (Geranium x magnificum): Large lilac-blue flowers, lush foliage.

Blood-red geranium (Geranium sanguineum): Bright flowers, decorative foliage, long-blooming.

 Differences from pelargonium

It's important not to confuse garden geraniums (crane geranium, genus Geranium) with pelargoniums (indoor geraniums, genus Pelargonium), which are heat-loving and grown in pots.
