It is widely distributed in the Mediterranean countries, in Transcaucasia, on the southern coast of Crimea, in the Carpathians, on the Black Sea coast of the Krasnodar Territory, in Central Asia, on the Iranian plateau.
Fig is one of the most ancient cultivated plants, presumably the most ancient. Fig was first grown in Arabia, from where it was borrowed by Phoenicia, Syria and Egypt. In the 13th century BC, it played an important role in the agriculture of the Kingdom of Pylos. It came to America only at the end of the 16th century.
