7 rules for growing boviaea indoors!

When growing boviaea, there are usually no serious difficulties. But in order for the plant to feel comfortable, it is necessary to follow a number of agricultural rules:

Put boviaea in a bright place. This crop is considered shade-tolerant, but the length and branching of the peduncle directly depends on the intensity of lighting.

Grow at moderate temperatures with cool wintering. Boviaea easily adapts to any temperature regime, but prefers to grow with a clearly defined change of seasons.

Be careful when watering. This crop does not tolerate even short-term over-moistening of the substrate. It is difficult to dry out boviaea, but very easy to overwater.

Do not plant boviaea in too large pots. The roots of boviaea are thick and strong, grow well and require a sufficient volume of soil. However, when determining the diameter of the pot, you should focus not on the roots, but on the bulb. The diameter of the container should be only 2-3 cm larger than the diameter of the bulb, otherwise the plant will start to get sick.

Plant the boviaea in a very light, drained substrate. It should allow water and air to pass through freely and not contain too much humus. Excessively fatty soils cause the boviaea bulbs to rot.

Monitor moderate air humidity. This crop reacts negatively to damp air, preferring a dry external environment. For this reason, it is better to place the boviaea separately from other plants so as not to impede aeration.

Observe moderation when applying fertilizers. Overfeeding the plant is strictly not recommended. Fertilizers should be purely supportive.

Additionally, it is worth noting that the boviaea should be protected from pests - scale insects and mealybugs, which like to settle on the juicy scales of the bulbs.

Bowieas can easily grow several in a common pot, but they do not like to be near other plants. This is a solo culture, preferring a lot of air, light and space.

Bowiea after purchase: quarantine and transplant

Flower shops, as a rule, sell already adult bowieas, with large, well-formed bulbs. This allows the gardener to avoid unnecessary time spent on independently bringing the plant to decorativeness. But such specimens have one drawback - they can carry a hidden infection or pest larvae inside the scales.

Immediately after purchase, bowiea must be placed in a two-week quarantine. This must be done even if the plant looks completely healthy.

The second important procedure that should be carried out is transplanting from transport soil. Firstly, such a substrate contains a large amount of salts and hormones. Secondly, pests can hide in it. Thirdly, the composition of transport soils does not meet the requirements of the culture.

To replant a purchased boviaea, you need to select a pot of a suitable diameter with drainage holes and prepare a suitable soil mixture. It can be composed of different components:

 Pot mixture option.

Turf soil, Leaf soil, Coarse river sand, Brick chips, Charcoal.

The first transplant of boviaea should be done with the roots completely freed from the soil and washed with clean water. Subsequent procedures can be performed by transshipment.

Important! If the purchased boviaea is actively vegetating, it still needs to be replanted. Transport substrates are not suitable for plant life. Do not worry if the shoots dry out after transplantation - these are temporary difficulties that will disappear as soon as the boviaea adapts to normal soil conditions.
