Close-up, focus on a red tulip against a blurred field.

All tulips are typical geophytes-ephemerals, adapted to life in mountainous, steppe and desert areas with hot dry summers, cold winters and short warm and humid, rainy springs. The development of a tulip from a seed to a flowering plant takes from three to seven years.

The change of generations of bulbs, unlike daffodils, occurs annually. During the short spring vegetation, the tulip blooms, bears fruit and lays young bulbs underground, and the faded bulb dies.

During the summer dormancy period, and in some species in winter, the rudiments of the shoot and flower of the next year are formed inside the bulb. In the fall, the bulb gives roots and completes the laying of the fruiting shoot.
