Agave americana.

This species can have up to 30 hard and fleshy leaves covered with a waxy coating in a basal rosette. Under proper conditions, they can reach two meters in length and up to 25 cm in width at the base. Some forms have central yellow or white stripes on the leaves.

Fifteen-year-old plants bloom, which can last up to three weeks, and bear fruit, after which the agave dies.   American agave flowers are large, up to 10 cm long. The plant is very photophilous and does not tolerate over-watering.

Agave americana yellow-edged has an even shorter stem. There are sharp thorns on the tops of the leaves. In accordance with the name, its leaves are bordered by yellowish stripes, which makes the whole plant look very decorative.

Agave americana multicolored is much smaller in size, it is more compact, it is easy to grow at home in a large pot.

A distinctive feature of this species is the bright color of the leaves - their center is yellow, and the edges are green, the thorns are small. Unpretentious, in winter it does not even need to be watered, it is enough to just spray it periodically.

The striped agave has a different distribution of colors - in the central part the leaves are green, and at the edges they are yellow. Their apical thorns are about 0.8 cm long.   Unfortunately, this species is not suitable for growing in small apartments, sharp thorns and dense, upward-growing leaves reaching 70 cm can be dangerous for children or pets.
