 Poppy is a genus of frost-hardy annual, biennial and perennial plants. The flowers have two sepals, which fall off when the bud opens, and four (or up to six) petals of red, pink, orange, yellow or purple.

 The ovary later develops into a capsule, which is covered with dry stigmas. Numerous tiny seeds are released with the slightest breeze through the pores of the capsule.

 The typical poppy gynoecium is a globular ovary. The tenae, like plate-like stigmata, lie on the upper part of the ovary. The pollen-receptive surfaces. The characteristic poppy fruit type is a single-celled capsule.

 The stigmatic disc lies on top of the capsule, and below it are pores or valves with disintegrating edges. This genus includes about 70-100 species. Poppy is native to temperate and cold regions of Eurasia, Africa and North America.
