Ficus lyrata often begins its existence as an epiphyte high in the crown of another tree. Its long aerial roots gradually reach the ground, where they twine around the trunk of the supporting tree and can cause its death. It can also develop as a free-standing tree, reaching a height of 12-15 meters.
