One of the most popular and hardy climbing rose varieties, bred in Germany in 1952 by Wilhelm Kordes. The variety's name translates to "Dance of Flames," which perfectly reflects the bush's appearance during flowering.
Flammentanz is a descendant of "Rosa kordesii" and *Rosa rubiginosa*, both of which Kordes used to breed his finest shrub roses. Wilhelm Kordes considered it his best red-flowered hybrid, though he also criticized it for blooming only once. The variety is highly winter-hardy, making it popular in Scandinavia, where the climate renders repeat blooming less critical than in regions with longer growing seasons. The rich red flowers, measuring about 8 cm across, appear in clusters of 3–7 on a stiff, thorny bush. It grows into a sprawling, somewhat untidy shrub or a short climber. The foliage is bright green and may occasionally show signs of chlorosis, yet the variety is generally very robust.
