The variety was developed in France by breeder Francis Meilland in the late 1930s. The rose has a unique history: on the eve of the occupation of France, cuttings were secretly sent via diplomatic mail to the United States, Germany, and Italy. In the United States, the variety went on sale on the day Berlin fell (April 29, 1945) under the name "Peace." In Germany, it was named "Gloria Dei" (Glory to God); in Italy, "Gioia" (Joy); and in France, it was officially registered as "Mme A. Meilland" in honor of the creator's mother.
Incredibly large (13–16 cm in diameter, sometimes up to 19 cm) and densely double (up to 45 petals). It has a goblet shape as it begins to open, transitioning into a lush, peony-like form.
The variety is valued for its hardiness, strong disease resistance, and good winter hardiness (USDA Zone 6, down to -23°C); however, in cold climates, it requires basic care.
The base of the flower is pale yellow or cream, while the petal edges are adorned with an elegant pink-raspberry rim. The intensity of the shades depends on the weather, soil composition, and light levels.
Watering should be infrequent but deep (about 10 liters at the base every 7–10 days). In spring, the rose is fed with nitrogen to promote foliage growth, while in summer and autumn, potassium-phosphorus fertilizers are used to strengthen buds and roots.
Before the onset of sustained freezing temperatures, the bush is hilled up with dry soil or peat to a height of 20–30 cm and covered with agrofibre or spruce boughs.
