Planting.
You can plant Vanilla Fraisie hydrangea both in spring and summer, without waiting for autumn. For northern regions, spring planting is preferable.
Before planting, it is recommended to soak the roots in a root stimulator for 12 hours.
The hydrangea seedling is not buried in the ground and is placed on the surface so that the root collar is at ground level, then covered with soil. After planting, the seedlings are mulched with a layer of peat, pine needles, humus (at least 6-8 cm) and watered abundantly.

If you purchased seedlings in the summer, during flowering, they can be planted in open ground, carefully, with a lump of earth, transferring them from the pot to the planting hole. Hydrangea quickly takes root and adapts to new conditions before the cold weather arrives. After planting, provide the plant with natural shade from the scorching sun and water it generously.
Watering.
Hydrangea is a moisture-loving plant and needs regular abundant watering and spraying. The soil around the bush should be constantly moistened, it should not be allowed to dry out, especially in hot and dry summers. Water the bush 1-2 times a week very generously, using up to 30 liters of warm, settled or rainwater, per 1 square meter of land. If spring or summer is rainy, watering is significantly reduced. Excessive moisture can cause rot on the roots of the plant, and over-watering of the soil also provokes the development of fungal diseases. To maintain soil moisture and provide the roots with additional nutrition, the root circle around the bush must be mulched. Peat, sawdust, spruce needles are used as mulch, an approximate layer of 10 to 15 cm. It is recommended to periodically loosen the soil around the bush, this event will get rid of weeds and enrich the soil with oxygen.
Top dressing.
Hydrangea paniculata Vanilla Fraise does not need top dressing with fertilizers in the first year after planting, since all the substances necessary for its growth and development were added to the soil before planting, during soil preparation.
The first top dressing is carried out in the second year of the plant's life, in April, using mineral components: ammonium and potassium nitrate, as well as superphosphate. The second top dressing is necessary during the budding period to stimulate the formation of a luxurious crown and long-term abundant flowering of the bush. Subsequent feeding should be carried out throughout the summer season, with a frequency of 2 times a month, using a complex fertilizer specifically for hydrangeas, which can be purchased at a flower shop, mineral compositions for azaleas or rhododendrons are also suitable.
Pruning.
Pruning is a necessary measure in the care of hydrangea, which helps to maintain the decorativeness of the bush, create a beautiful rounded crown shape, and also stimulate lush flowering. Pruning of shoots is carried out in the spring and consists of several stages:
- Removal of damaged, dry and weak branches, as well as last year's inflorescences.
- Formation of the crown. Pruning of shoots is carried out in order to form the skeleton of the bush. Last year's shoots are shortened by two-thirds of the length using pruning shears.
- Stimulating pruning. It is carried out annually, every spring, the purpose of pruning is to provide the bush with abundant long-term flowering. As soon as you notice that the growth buds have swollen, usually at the beginning of April, it is time to prune. The shoots are cut at the level of 1-3 pairs of swollen buds. The branches located inside the bush should be removed.
- Rejuvenation of an adult bush. Old shoots are removed to the very base, leaving about 10 strong healthy shoots.
- Autumn pruning is necessary to remove faded dry inflorescences so that the shoots begin to form new flowers for the next season.
Preparing for winter.
A distinctive feature of the Vanille Fraise hydrangea is frost resistance (it can withstand temperatures down to minus 29 degrees). Adult bushes tolerate the frosty winter of our region well and do not need careful shelter. Even if some bushes freeze a little - no big deal, the Vanille Fraise hydrangea quickly recovers.
For successful wintering of young bushes, it is necessary to hill the trunk circle with rotted compost, garden soil in the fall to protect the roots of the plant. Sprinkle young shoots with dry grass, sawdust, spruce branches and place a box over them, cover with non-woven material.
