The flower is located on a peduncle 4.0-5.0 cm long, at the base of which there is one membranous bract. Flowers 13-15 cm long, 15-25 cm in diameter, funnel-shaped or tubular, of various colors: bright red, dark cherry, pink, orange, white, etc. The perianth is fused, corolla-shaped, from 6 leaflets arranged in two circles.
The perianth tube can be very long (10-12 cm) or very short (2-4 cm). The leaflets of the outer circle are larger than the inner ones; the uppermost leaflet of the outer circle is usually larger than the others, and the lowermost leaflet of the inner circle is the smallest. In the throat of the perianth there are appendages of bristles, scales and hairs that cover the throat.
Their presence is one of the essential features in distinguishing species.A bulbous plant of the Amaryllis family.
There are 90 species in the genus, all of which live in the wild in the tropics and subtropics of America, including the Amazon rainforest.
Representatives of this genus came to Europe in the 16th century. Many of them were used in selection, crossed with each other. As a result, those hippeastrums that are grown at home, botanists identified as a separate species - hippeastrum hybrid.
Currently, more than 1,500 thousand varieties of this flower are registered in the world, several of them were bred in Russia.
