Plant Description
Appearance: The leaves are glossy, leathery, and dark green.
Inflorescences: Dense, spherical umbels consisting of numerous small, four-petaled flowers.
Color: Red predominates, but yellow, orange, pink, and white shades are also available.
Size: Up to 2 m in the wild; often pruned to 30-100 cm indoors.
Indoor Care
Lighting: Bright light, but no direct sunlight; supplementary lighting is required in winter. Temperature: 20-25°C in summer, not below 15°C in winter; does not like drafts.
Watering: Regular; soil should be moist but not wet.
Humidity: High humidity is important; frequent misting is necessary.
Soil: Acidic, loose soil, similar to that for azaleas.
Fertilizing: Use a complete fertilizer for flowering plants from March to August.
Pruning: To shape the bush and stimulate flowering.
Interesting Facts
The national flower of Suriname.
Used in Ayurvedic medicine.
The name comes from the Hindu god Shiva (Ishwara).
