 The original range of the genus was South and East Asia: Japan, South Korea, southern China, northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan and eastern Iran. Later, some species were brought to North Carolina, Texas and other southern states of the United States. Some of them naturalized over time.

 These poppies are low maintenance when planted in their hardiness zones, and are excellent for naturalizing. They also grow well in beds, allotments, borders, and pollinator gardens.
