The original range of the genus was South and East Asia: Japan, South Korea, southern China, northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan and eastern Iran. Later, some species were brought to North Carolina, Texas and other southern states of the United States. Some of them naturalized over time.

In English, they are called hurricane lilies or cluster amaryllis. In addition, in English, the phrase "spider lily" refers to three genera of the Amaryllidaceae family - Hymenocallis, Crinum and Lycoris itself.
