In nature, plants of this genus grow on tree trunks and branches or on the ground in the humid tropical forests of Brazil. The annual rainfall here is from 2000 to 3000 millimeters, and the air temperature almost never drops below 18 °C.

Representatives of the genus are succulent shrubs with stems consisting of segments. The segments of some species are cylindrical, club-shaped (cone-shaped), in other species they are flat.
Flowers appear only in the youngest areoles at the tops of the stems, which is a characteristic difference from the genus Rhipsalis, which is close to Hatiora. The color of the corollas is yellow, pink, red, depending on the species.
The fruit is a yellow or white berry.
