If it overwinters well in containers (this is my first time trying this), it will be ready for spring.

Poppies need to be planted in a permanent location. They have very deep taproots. Digging them up completely is practically impossible. This means that in a year or two, a poppy bush will be back in the old spot. We don't just throw the roots around; somehow, they give life to the poppy bush. So now I have poppies growing in three places: the old spot, the new spot, and where I threw the roots.
