stems with large ribs, a powerful root system;

gray, brown or black thorns stand out beautifully against the background of a greenish-bluish stem;

large (up to 25 cm in length) greenish-white, white or pink flowers bloom at night;

the fruits are edible, yellow or red, berry-like, naked, more than 10 cm long.
