Mostly epiphytes, but become terrestrial plants when the host tree falls.
The trunk is very short or absent.

The leaves are arranged in a rosette, like rose petals, cordate, entire (resembling canna leaves), erect, 35-56 cm long (can grow up to 2 m long and more), 15-25 cm wide, pointed at the apex, wedge-shaped or truncated at the base, widened in the middle, thick, leathery or semi-leathery, glossy, mostly dark green; slightly paler below, from semi-glossy to matte; lateral veins are barely visible. The petiole is short, 30-40 cm long, C-shaped with a longitudinal groove, probably storing water and starch, as it is often thick and swollen; the edges of the groove are sharp.
The spathe is light green, greenish-yellow or greenish-cream above and reddish-purple within the tube.
The seeds are spread by birds or animals eating the plant's fruits.
